Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Bank Indonesia (BI) revoke and withdraw 20 types of Special Rupiah denominations (URK) for the 1970-1990 issuance years from circulation. This is in line with Bank Indonesia Regulation number 23 of 2021. Through this regulation, the URK is no longer valid as a legal tender in Indonesia as of August 30, 2021.
“For people who have the URK and want to exchange it, they can exchange it at Commercial Banks starting from August 30, 2021 to August 29, 2031, or 10 years from the date of revocation,” said Head of the BI Communication Department Erwin Haryono in an official statement, Tuesday (31 /8/2021).
The rupiah currency in question is:
1. Special Series 25 Rupiah for the Year of Independence of the Republic of Indonesia in the Year of Issue 1970 in 10 (ten) denominations;
2. Special Rupiah Currency Series for the 1974 Emission of the Year in the amount of 3 (three) denominations;
3. Special Rupiah Currency Series for the 1987 Emission Year in the amount of 2 (two) denominations;
4. Special Rupiah for the Struggle Series ’45 Year 1990 Issue in 3 (three) denominations;
5. Special Rupiah for the Save The Children Series for the 1990 Emission of 2 (two) denominations.
One of the rupiah notes that attracted attention was the Special Rupiah Currency Series for the 1974 Emission of Nature with a nominal value of Rp. 100 thousand. The rupiah currency has also become a topic of discussion on social media. The material for manufacture is gold as stated in the BI announcement. Erwin confirmed this to CNBC Indonesia. “Yes,” he said when asked if it was true that the rupiah was made of gold.
BI emphasized that in exchanging the URK issued from 1970 to 1990 which had been revoked, the nominal value of the money reimbursed was the same as that stated in the said URK.
“Exchange services can also be carried out at the BI Head Office and Representative Offices throughout Indonesia, by referring to the provisions or information submitted regarding BI’s operational schedule and public services,” Erwin said.
The replacement of URK in shabby, defective, or damaged conditions is carried out by referring to the Bank Indonesia Regulation regarding the management of Rupiah currency, namely:
– In the event that the physical Rupiah currency is greater than 1/2 its original size and the authenticity of the Rupiah currency can be identified, a replacement will be given at the nominal value of the Rupiah currency exchanged, and
– In the event that the physical Rupiah coins are equal to or less than 1/2 the original size, no replacement will be given.
“BI urges people who will make exchanges at all BI offices to continue to carry out the Covid-19 protocol,” he said.
