Per Mps December 5th was a day to circle. In Bag the stock reached the highest reached in the last year, reaching 3.31 euros. This means a capitalization on Piazza Affari of 4.17 billion. In the last twelve months the shares have increased their value by 77%, considering that after the capital increase, they were put back on the market at 2 euros.
The result comes in the aftermath of the news that Montepaschi has exceeded the capital parameters required by the ECB. News that closely follows the positive assessments made by the rating agencies.
The president of the ABI, Antonio Patuelli, also spoke about MPS. He did so in relation to the sale of 25% of the capital made by the Treasury. “She was very efficient decision-making wise and the realization of the market”, said the banker, then focusing on the financial scenarios. “Do I have a nail in my head about privatizations? he added. We decide whether they are needed in the income statement or in the capital account; if, once again, we do them for public spending then the State will eat the capital”. According to Patuelli, however, “privatizations must reduce the debt, if we do this and give this signal a virtuous circle will also be triggered in the negotiations European, towards the Mediterranean countries considered wasteful”.
Speaking of privatisations, the positive results in the performance of MPS continue to fuel speculation on the future of the bank. The Treasury remains the owner of 39%, but this share makes the possibility of launching market operations easier.
If anything, it is more complicated to identify a person interested in taking charge of it. A leaner and stronger institution, which could soon free itself from another portion of provisions for related risks, is undoubtedly attractive. The rest will be given by the macro-economic conditions of the moment.
