“Education is the best way to prevent poverty”

The use of digital devices – such as laptops – has been intensified by the pandemic. But not all have the option of providing their children with digital equipment in the form of a laptop. “In difficult times like these, it is particularly important to be there for each other and to offer families in need,” said Michael Lander (IT manager at Siemens AG Austria) when the laptops were handed over to the Caritas learning cafés of the Archdiocese of Vienna and to Religious communities Austria.

The Caritas learning cafés help children with their homework and help them prepare for tests and schoolwork. During the Corona crisis, the children and also the volunteers are now increasingly dependent on communicating via laptops.
“During the lockdowns we have to switch the learning cafés temporarily to digital communication: Learning cafés are temporarily turning into remote cafés. This way we can continue to support the children and, secondarily, their parents during this challenging time and avoid knowledge gaps in the long term. Because we know: education is the best prevention of poverty. Our goal is to prevent an education lockdown and to accompany the children as well as possible through this time, “emphasizes Klaus Schwertner, Caritas Director of the Archdiocese of Vienna and thanks Siemens for the donated laptops.

Hold up the value of education

“The digitization of teaching is often an increased challenge for families and children. We religious communities want to uphold the value of education and to support and preserve the equal opportunities that education enables. The #orderlearning campaign sponsored by Siemens and AfB supports families in precarious circumstances Laptops, so that learning is also possible in distance learning, “adds Clemens Paulovics, Head of Education and Religious Schools. The company AfB social green IT from Klagenfurt set up the laptops donated by Siemens free of charge and the two organizations “Caritas & VOSÖ” take care of the distribution. (red)
