Siemens Revolutionizes Manufacturing with AI-Guided Robot Hand Design

As the level of use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in the manufacturing sector increases, new examples of innovation are emerging around the world. German engineering company Siemens recently supplied robot hands (grippers) designed by generative AI to customers manufacturing automobile parts, improving performance and reducing costs and carbon emissions.

This robot hand has a shape that humans could not have imagined, and is reminiscent of an alien hand. The robot hand previously used was a square product made of metal.

This product was created by asking AI to draw a lighter design with the same performance. AI created a new structure centered on the part that receives force from the robot hand, and an unexpected shape emerged. Because the shape of the product was complex, it was processed by stacking synthetic resin (polymer) using a 3D printer instead of cutting the metal.

Siemens explained that this method reduced the weight of the robot hand from 60 kg to 18 kg. The cost of the manufacturing process was reduced by 73% and carbon emissions by 82%. As the product has become lighter and simpler, the energy consumed during operation and maintenance requirements have also decreased. Siemens achieved similar results by applying AI-based design and 3D additive manufacturing methods to improve the design of precision components for cooling in batteries.

Korean manufacturers are also actively attempting to utilize AI, but cases of innovation based on AI-based design are still difficult to come across. At the factory automation exhibition held at COEX last week, AI solutions used by major Korean manufacturing companies such as semiconductors, automobiles, and batteries were exhibited, but most of them were aimed at improving the accuracy of inspection or increasing yield with images synthesized with generative AI.

Major advanced manufacturing countries are providing policy support for the combination of manufacturing and AI to respond to demographic changes and increase manufacturing productivity and competitiveness. The Korean government should also provide practical help to companies developing manufacturing AI technology by taking advantage of this year’s process analysis and pilot projects for each industry and company to realize AI autonomous manufacturing.
