Siemens has entered the hydrogen train segment

According to Siemens, hydrogen mobility is the future mainly on non-electrified lines.

After Alstom, Siemens is the second major player in the railway industry to enter the hydrogen-powered train segment.

Siemens has announced that the Simenens Mobility division and Siemens Energy have signed a memorandum of cooperation on the joint development and supply of hydrogen systems for rail transport. The aim of the project is to jointly develop modern comprehensively designed hydrogen technologies for railway transport, including infrastructure and vehicle parts, and to offer them to customers to develop the application of hydrogen in transport in Germany and other European countries.

Hydrogen trains are being talked about more and more often, but in reality only one type runs on hydrogen: the Alstom Coradia iLint.

Siemens wants to use its operations in various industries to develop not only a hydrogen vehicle, but also to produce hydrogen and provide filling stations.

“The goal of Siemens Energy is the completely emission-free production of electricity and heat using renewable sources. By connecting to the mobility sector, energy can be provided completely without emissions, using green hydrogen. That is, hydrogen, which is produced by electrolysis of water using electricity obtained from renewable sources,“Says Jaroslav Lahoda, Director of Siemens Energy. In cooperation with Siemens Mobility, it wants to provide, among other things, solutions for the production of hydrogen for filling stations for hydrogen vehicles. Hydrogen vehicles are mainly intended to replace diesel sets where there are no electrified lines.

Siemens Energy has not been part of the Siemens Group since the end of September this year. Siemens is the largest shareholder of Siemens Energy.
