Sidney Poitier is dead. The Oscar winner was 94 years old

Poitier was awarded the American Film Academy Award in 1963 for the main role in “Wild Lilies”. He also played in the film adaptation of the opera “Porgy and Bess”, the comedy-drama “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”, in the crime drama “My name is Tibbs!” and comedy Saturday Night, where he performed with Bill Cosby.

He grew up in the Bahamas, but moved to the United States at the age of 15, where in 1955 he landed his first role in movie “School Jungle” In the 1970s he switched to the other side of the camera – he directed the comedy “Pure madness” with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor, among others.

In the years 1997-2007 he was the ambassador of the Bahamas in Japan.
