At the opening event of the Christmas season in southern Brazil, a promenade facing a bay collapsed – more than 30 people fell into the canal system below. The event was then interrupted. Security guards and rescue teams provided first aid, reported the Joinville city council in the state of Santa Catarina yesterday evening (local time).
21 adults and twelve children were taken to different hospitals, no one was seriously injured. According to information from the city administration, all of them have already been released. The cause of the accident in Joinville is still unclear.
“Fathers and mothers with children in their arms fell down,” the Brazilian news portal G1 quoted Ricardo Korb, a resident of Joinville. They landed about two meters deeper in the mud.
