Absenteeism among employees continues to rise. In the fourth quarter of 2022, absenteeism averaged 5.6 percent, it reports Central Bureau for Statistics. In the last quarter of 2021, this was still 5.4 percent.
It is the seventh year in a row that absenteeism has risen. It is now almost as high as in 2000, when the highest absenteeism rate of recent decades was measured at 5.7 percent. After that, a significant decline set in. Statistics Netherlands does not cite any causes.
The sector in which most employees are sick is still health and welfare. There, absenteeism increased from 7.5 to 8 percent in a year. Within the healthcare sector, employees in nursing, care and home care are most ill: 9.3 percent.
Agriculture little sick
The largest increase in the absenteeism percentage can be seen in the government sector (from 5.7 to 6.4 percent) and in the water companies and waste management sector (from 6.5 to 7.1 percent).
Absenteeism decreased in agriculture and fisheries, from 3.8 to 3.3 percent. This is now the industry in which the fewest people are ill. Last year it was the financial services sector, but absenteeism rose from 3.0 to 3.4 percent.
