Sick Paulien Cornelisse: ‘I have many good days’

Paulien Cornelisse has had “many good days and good moments” since she was treated for cancer. The writer and comedian said this on Monday in the talk show Eva, where she briefly discussed her illness. Cornelisse (48) announced in August that she had cancer and had to cancel her tour as a result. On Monday it was announced that Cornelisse has written the Book Week essay for next year.

“It’s really stupid to have cancer. So things aren’t going well in that respect. But I do have a lot of good days and good moments, so that surprises me in a way,” Cornelisse said. “And I think it’s really, really bad that I had to cancel my theater tour because of this. But then I’m also happy that I can write, that gives me a lot. I do that for de Volkskrant and now also the essay, so that’s nice, yes.”

When asked by presenter Eva Jinek whether she is also angry because she is ill, Cornelisse answered negatively. “I don’t have that much anger. I did think beforehand that I would have a lot of panic, but it turns out that I can’t feel that all day long. When I start writing, I’m in a different world and that’s wonderful.”

The essay Cornelisse wrote is called Hèhè – About what we say without realizing it. It will be available in bookstores during the 90th Boekenweek, which has been given the theme Your mother tongue. The Boekenweek will take place from Wednesday 12 to Sunday 23 March 2025.
