Sick Jeroen van Merwijk cancels tour after relapse | NOW

Comedian Jeroen van Merwijk, who announced in February that he had been diagnosed with colon cancer, is canceling his upcoming tour. The 65-year-old songwriter writes down Facebook that he is dealing with “a major relapse”.

According to Van Merwijk, it seemed rather that the treatment methods in the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek were successful and that even the tumors started to shrink.

“I was therefore convinced that, with some good will and perseverance, I was able to complete the tour of sixty performances in five months”, the comedian writes.

However, Van Merwijk explains that he had to deal with a relapse last month. That has made it clear to him that he is not yet ready to return to the scene. “I just have to be realistic about that. I am too weak and have too little energy to handle that effort.”

‘Comeback á la Herman Finkers’

The songwriter and radio maker apologizes on Facebook. “I realize that this is embarrassing a lot of parties”, says Van Merwijk. “I hope that in the future I will be able to meet you again and that one day, like Herman Finkers, I can come up with a spectacular comeback.”

The comedian here refers to colleague Finkers, who was unable to perform for six years due to chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Nevertheless, he returned afterwards with several theater shows.

Van Merwijk reported in February that after a performance in De Kleine Komedie in Amsterdam, he “felt something in his stomach that did not seem familiar to him”. He went to the doctor, was examined at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek and was then told that he suffers from colon cancer.
