Sicily: British tycoon Mike Lynch was recovered dead – 2024-08-21 17:17:14

Two more bodies were found by Italian rescuers aboard the yacht Bayesian, which sank early Monday off Sicily, Reuters reported, citing sources close to the investigation.

Earlier, divers had found two more bodies inside the sunken vessel. Along with Bayesian’s chef, who was found dead a few hours after the wreck, the death toll now stands at five.

According to the Daily Telegraph, citing the head of the Sicilian Civil Protection Service, two of the bodies found today, Wednesday, August 21, belong to British tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter.

It is recalled that earlier two other bodies were found, which have not yet been identified.

Who was Mike Lynch?

Mike Lynch, tech guru and millionaire software salesman, was among those missing after his superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily.

He is, the Guardian reports, one of the few examples of a UK entrepreneur who created a global technology company, leading many to call him Britain’s Bill Gates, although in reality his story is very different from his founder of Microsoft.

Notably, about three months ago, the 59-year-old was acquitted of 15 US fraud charges following the $11.1 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy, by Silicon Valley giant Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

“It would be the end of me”

If convicted, Lynch feared he would end up dying in prison due to lung problems.

“I have various medical issues that would make it very difficult for me to survive,” Leeds told The Sunday Times just last month.

“If (the legal adventure) didn’t go well, that would be the end of my life in any sense.”

Born in Ireland, Lynch grew up near Essex, to a nurse mother and a firefighter father.

He studied physics, mathematics and biochemistry at Cambridge University but eventually majored in computer science.

His PhD thesis is considered one of the most widely read research papers in the relevant university community.
