At least 113 people died as a result of a landslide in a jade mine in northern Myanmar, according to the new official balance sheet released by the relief team.
“So far we have found a total of 113 bodies”, refer the firefighters through the official page on the social network Facebook.
According to the police authorities, the search will be suspended because of heavy rains.
The first balance of victims indicated that 50 people had died.
The accident occurred at a jade mine in the north of the country, when a landslide buried workers, the fire department said.
“The miners were swept away by a torrent of mud caused by heavy rains,” the relief services wrote on the social network.
The landslides in jade mines cause casualties every year in the mountainous region of Kachin state, on the border with China and India, especially during the rainy season.
The area is at the center of Myanmar’s jade extraction, the world’s largest producer of this precious stone, with extraction conditions being very precarious and accidents frequent.
Mining companies employ many illegal workers. In April 2019, a landslide killed at least 54 people in the region.
