SIC Notícias | Lisbon Chamber has 33 “active” cases of infection among workers

The Lisbon City Council currently records 33 cases of infection by Covid-19 “active”, in a total of 53 positive cases, 20 of which were recovered, announced today the vice president of the municipality.

João Paulo Saraiva said, in a public meeting of the municipal executive, that the increase in numbers is due to a focus on the cleaning post in Telheiras, however, it does not say how many workers there will be infected.

“The municipality of Lisbon had figures that were well below national figures until a week ago, but there was a focus that has already been addressed, evaluated, studied and is being followed,” said the mayor, in response to a question from PSD councilman João Pedro Costa.

Questioned by Lusa, a source from João Paulo Saraiva’s office (Citizens for Lisbon, elected by the PS) said that the 33 cases concern the total universe of workers in the city council and municipal companies – about 12 thousand – but the number of infected at the Telheiras cleaning station.

According to the councilor, it is a question of “a group of people” that will not have followed the established rules, a situation that was not “properly managed by the leaders” and that “is being evaluated and monitored”.

It was not revealed how many workers in the municipality have already been tested

Regarding the testing policy of the municipality, João Paulo Saraiva recalled that he follows the line recommended by the Directorate-General for Health, no matter how many workers in the municipality have already been tested as asked by the Social-Democratic councilor.

The deputy mayor also referred that the municipality does a “worker-to-worker monitoring (…) until it starts to recover”.

João Paulo Saraiva also mentioned that an “internal campaign in some areas” is being carried out, where it was detected that there is “greater tranquility on the part of the people”, in order to prevent the spread of the virus.

On May 26, the Lisbon municipality registered 11 workers infected by the new coronavirus, of which nine cases were recovered and two “active”.

The Covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 512,000 deaths and infected more than 10.56 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

In Portugal, 1,579 people out of 42,454 confirmed as infected died, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate-General for Health.
