SIC Notícias | Covid-19 killed one million people worldwide

This Sunday the world reaches the symbolic mark of one million deaths by covid-19. The number was already expected for this weekend, in a count that, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) could double in the coming months.

After Europe succeeded China as the center of the pandemic in February, the American continent is now the one with the most confirmed cases and the most deaths.

The United States has hitherto counted with the covid-19, with 204,499 in 7,079,689 diagnosed cases, in a country that still records 2,750,459 recoveries.

After the United States, the countries most affected are Brazil, with 141,406 deaths in 4,717,991 cases, India, which recorded 94,503 deaths and 5,992,532 diagnoses, Mexico, where 76,243 people died and 726,431 were infected, and the Kingdom Kingdom, which totals 41,971 deaths and 429,277 cases.

In Portugal, 1,953 have died since the start of the pandemic and 73,604 have been infected. The largest number of deaths continues to be concentrated in people over 80 years of age.

AVOID TWO MILLION DEAD IN THE NEXT MONTHS

The World Health Organization says it is necessary to join efforts between all countries to prevent two million deaths from covid-19 already in the coming months.

The WHO said on Friday that a vaccine could not be expected to appear to contain the covid-19 pandemic, admitting that the death toll could double over the next year and reach two million.

Between life and death

These images, which come to us from hospitals around the world, are the mirror of a new reality brought about by the covid-19 pandemic.

The photographs depict difficult scenarios, where healthcare professionals – some tired and frustrated – strive to treat patients – some in a more serious condition than others.

On the day that the world reaches the symbolic mark of a million dead by covid-19, we remember those who are between life and death.
