SIC Notícias | Accident with fire engine makes one dead

A 21-year-old firefighter died this Saturday after the screening for a rescue vehicle, in Sertã, which left four injured, one of them in serious condition.

“This Saturday, we live another moment of regret, with the death of firefighter Diogo Dias, of the Fire Department of Proença-a-Nova, victim of a road accident during the fire fighting that broke out in Oleiros.”

In a statement to which SIC had access, Minister Eduardo Cabrita sent his condolences to his family, friends and to the Humanitarian Association of Voluntary Firefighters of Proença-a-Nova.

The minister also left a message for firefighters injured in the same accident.

“It will never be too much to remember and reaffirm the committed, altruistic and professional way in which thousands of firefighters are part of this national effort to defend the forest against fires every day.”

The accident caused four injuries, one seriously. The wounded were transferred to the Amato Lusitano Hospital in Castelo Branco.

Live for SIC Notícias, the mayor of Proença-a-Nova, João Lobo, explained that the vehicle overturned after a tire burst. The accident happened in Perna do Galego, in the municipality of Sertã, with a vehicle from the Proença-a-Nova corporation that was helping to fight the flames in Oleiros.

At the end of the night, the commander of the Oleiros Fire Department said that there were no homes at risk. However, Albino Caldeira guaranteed that there was already a plan in case it was necessary to displace the population.

At 00:26, more than 480 operatives, supported by 154 vehicles, were fighting the flames that forced the cutting of several roads in the region.
