Earlier this month, Sian was refused permission to burn the Koran during a protest outside the Turkish embassy. The decision has been appealed to the Norwegian Police Directorate.
The case is about “damaging our values of freedom”, says Lars Thorsen, head of Stop the Islamization of Norway (Sian), to Document.no.
– Which norms must Norwegian political agitators adhere to? Is it reasonable to demand that the people self-censor or the authorities censor the people beyond what the law allows, when violence is threatened or the authorities consider violence a likely response from anti-democrats? he asks.
Sian applied for and was initially granted permission to burn a Koran in front of the Turkish embassy in Oslo earlier this month. Because of the announced demonstration, Norway’s ambassador was summoned to a meeting in the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
On the same day, the message came that the Oslo police nevertheless do not allow the burning of the Koran.
– The police believe that they cannot ensure security in a satisfactory manner at this event, said police inspector Martin Strand in a press release.
