The fourth annual ministerial conference of the “AAA” initiative (Adaptation of African Agriculture) concluded on Monday in Meknes with the adoption of a declaration by the ministers of Agriculture as well as representatives of the organizations and international and regional financing institutions.
This statement highlights the fact that Africa, although not historically responsible for global warming, is experiencing its most severe consequences, affecting lives, livelihoods and economies. However, the continent is seen as having the potential and ambition to contribute significantly to the global solution to the problem of climate change.
The signatories also emphasized the vital role that women, youth and local communities must play in the adaptation of agriculture on the African continent. They are committed to actively including and supporting them in this process, in particular through inclusive and fair financing mechanisms.
They affirmed their intention to ensure that these groups are included in decision-making bodies and have priority access to funding and skills development programs.
They recognized Morocco’s leading role in promoting south-south cooperation in Africa and called for increased exchanges and cooperation between African countries to develop and apply innovative and sustainable financing solutions for adaptation of African agriculture.
They encouraged the sharing of successful experiences, technology transfer and mutual capacity building between countries. As such, they reiterated the central role of the AAA initiative as a platform for south-south cooperation for the adaptation of African agriculture, committing to intensify its activities, in particular through the organization of regular meetings between experts and decision-makers, and the establishment of exchange programs for farmers and producer organizations.
In addition, the declaration expresses a common ambition and a shared vision for the future of African agriculture in the face of climate challenges: promoting modern, sustainable and efficient agriculture, which feeds the population, creates jobs, preserves natural resources and contributes to the prosperity of the continent.
In conclusion, officials reaffirmed their commitment to mobilize their political will and resources to achieve this vision, in collaboration with all relevant stakeholders and with the support of the international community, with the objective of building a resilient and sustainable African agriculture. of hope for current and future generations.
The meeting was organized in parallel with the 16th edition of SIAM.
