The dog Sia, victim of abuse in September, is still at the Haute-Vienne SPA. His condition has improved according to the shelter, which also warns of the increase in cases of abandonment during the holiday season.
Everything is going well for Sia. The dog, who was found in a cellar in a building on rue Montesquieu at the end of September, in Limoges, is still being monitored by veterinarians, but her condition has greatly improved. The owner has not yet been tried.
The animal has gained weight, its wounds have healed and its hair is growing back again. Stéphanie Frugier, facilitator at the Haute-Vienne SPA, remembers the condition of the dog when she arrived at the SPA: “She is unrecognizable now. It is happiness. She was always happy despite what happened to her. She held no resentment towards the man.” she rejoices.

However, Sia will bear the after-effects of the abuse she suffered. She is still undergoing treatment and continues to have bone pain. Joint problems will remain for life. The animal developed early osteoarthritis which can only be treated on a daily and long-term basis.
The SPA hopes to find a new family for Sia even if her adoption will require greater monitoring: “The owner will need to have the means to be able to feed him suitable kibble, to show a lot of anticipation regarding his health problems to best support him as he ages”underlines Stéphanie Frugier.

A new family
Animals who are victims of abuse often find a new owner. “We have people who are very touched by the story of our residents and want to give them a new family. Most of the time, it goes well.”

The SPA carries out a study of the profile to ensure that the owner corresponds to the animal and will be able to meet its needs. “We are not hiding anything, we are warning about the financial cost. Some animals, for example, can no longer live with other animals.” A pre-visit in the presence of the animal is organized to ensure that the adoption framework is suitable.
The Haute-Vienne SPA is witnessing an increase in cases of abandonment at the end of the year. “It’s a disaster. I have the impression that the animal is a nuisance, for family celebrations, that we don’t know where we’re going to put it, with the expense of gifts, it’s too expensive,” deplores Stéphanie Frugier.
We are a dump, animals are like merchandise that we throw away. There is no consideration. Even when we tell the owners that we are going to put their animal in the kennel, without heating, they don’t care.

Certain reasons may be legitimate, such as long-term illness, returning to a nursing home or end of life, but these types of abandonment remain exceptional.
