NEW YORK, KOMPAS.com – Two employees of a luxury apartment building in New York have been fired from their jobs after being seen in the video failing to help an Asian American woman who was violently assaulted on a sidewalk near the building last month.

The dismissal was confirmed on Tuesday (6/4/2021) by the building management company, the Brodsky Organization. The attack took place March 29, not far from Times Square.

Surveillance video shows doorman, watching the attack from their building lobby. They waited more than a minute after the violence stopped, before finally stepping out of the building.

CCTV footage also showed one of them closing the door to the building, as the 65-year-old victim, Vilma Kari, lay on the ground seconds after the attack ended.

By the time the two men came out to approach the wounded woman, the attacker had already left.

Kari, who migrated from the Philippines decades ago, was walking to the church when he came across a man, who was then repeatedly kicked and stepped on by the attacker.

He suffered serious injuries, including a broken hip, and spent a day in the hospital.

Brodsky’s organization initially suspended the doorman pending an investigation. The investigation was completed on Tuesday (6/4/2021) resulting in the doorman being fired, the company said.

“While the full lobby video shows that after the attacker left, the doorman appeared to assist the victim and unload the NYPD vehicle. It is clear that the necessary emergency and safety protocols were not being followed,” the company said in a statement. Guardian.

The building guard’s union, SEIU 32BJ, also confirmed the two men had been fired, but declined to comment further.

The union earlier said the doorman waited until the attackers left. His goal was to check on Kari and lower the nearby patrol car, because they thought he had a knife.

Surveillance video shows a police car pulling up to a stop about a minute after the doorman got out.

Workers and officers are seen with him on the sidewalk for several minutes before the video cuts off.

Elizabeth Kari said someone across the street who was not seen on the surveillance video helped by screaming to distract the attacker.

The widely viewed surveillance video footage ends as the attacker walks away from Kari.

Elizabeth Kari said that the assailant was crossing the street and heading towards the audience who yelled at him. The person remains anonymous, he said.
