The Russian Athletics Championship has started in Chelyabinsk. There is a lot of attention to him now, because due to the lack of international starts (no one has a neutral status), all the tops of the national team came there. On the first day, the audience was lucky to see the world champion in pole vaulting Angelica Sidorov and the world champion in running at 110 m s / b Sergei Shubenkov.
Sidorova won the fourth Chechen Republic for herself (even the Olympic champion Elena Isinbayeva She did not take so many titles), jumping 4.70 m.We know, she can take heights and steeper, but the lack of starts is not a joke. By the way, she had no competitors even in this form. Prizewinners Irina Ivanova and Oksana Gataullina the results are modest – 4.50 m.
Soon Shubenkov went out onto the path. He had no competitors either. True, Sergei, like Sidorova, was dissatisfied with himself. For him, this is only the second start of the season. It is difficult for him to show sky-high seconds without competitive practice. 13.31 seconds – far from what the leader of the world season gave at the stage of the Diamond League in Monaco Orlando Ortega (13.11). But Shubenkov does not get hung up, he just wants to compete and does not lose hope that he will be able to go to any of the international starts.
Sidorova: I don’t feel competition
– At the Russian Cup in Bryansk, you said that a strong wind prevented us from doing everything to the maximum. Today it was noticeable that there was also wind. In such conditions, should you rejoice at the result of 4.70, or is there something to scold yourself for?
– In fact, the wind did not interfere very much today. Only a little in the face. The jumping conditions are good. Unfortunately, not everything worked out technically, so there is something to scold yourself for.
– Despite fatigue in Bryansk (at the Russian Cup in Athletics at the end of August – Sport24), you jumped 4.75, today – 4.70. And this is still better than the results of many six-balls in the world. Encourages that even if you are not there you still remain the best in the world?
– Unfortunately, I’m not the best in the world now, jumping 4.70 (laughs). In general, this is the level that I have been able to maintain for many years. It does not require any extraordinary effort. The above, alas, has not yet worked out. For this, it was necessary to train a little more. The technical moments failed.
– This is your fourth victory at the Russian championships. You have bypassed two-time Olympic champion Elena Isinbaeva in this indicator. Nice fact?
– Yes, but this is not the most important record.
– To what extent do the starts in Russia compensate for the absence at the international ones? Do you generally feel the competition in the sector?
– I don’t feel any competition.
I am glad that there are starts in Russia. Without them, it would be very difficult to keep fit.
– At last year’s Chechen Republic, athletes said that there was no national team. What now? Or is it difficult to understand because of the coronavirus, because everyone is trying to abstract from each other?
– Honestly, I don’t even know how to comment. At the championship, the guys always root for those they know. I haven’t noticed anything special yet. The championship has just begun. I haven’t had time to look yet. I will definitely return to the stadium now to see the remaining views. Tomorrow I will cheer for the boys in the pole vault sector.
Shubenkov: I want to continue the season. If only there were barriers and rivals
– In the semifinals, you raised the mood of many with your extravagant behavior during the presentation of the participants. What prompted? Is it pleasant to be in Chelyabinsk or is it pleasant to compete?
– I think the second is more than the first. Although … I’m also pleased to be in Chelyabinsk. I was here for the first time a long time ago, in 2006. I really liked it here. The competition is well organized. Moreover, in such a short time. I’m positive.
Representation? In the final, what I was trying to do was not visible. I didn’t want to make any presentation. There is a bedside table for which they put us. Then they say: “You will be introduced, and you come forward.” Well, how? Either from the side or from above. There were no options (laughs).
– Now at the US Open tournament, many tennis players speak negatively about the measures that the organizers have taken to protect against coronavirus. How are things with this at the Russian Championship? Does everyone follow the rules?
– In Bryansk, it was still that the entrance to the recreation room was only in masks, but here there is no such thing. All restrictions are associated with a tougher application procedure. All necessary documents are checked more thoroughly than usual.
– Has your form improved since the Russian Cup in Bryansk?
– I think yes. True, the form is a form, but some kind of content is still needed in it. This is more difficult in such a nervous, difficult and incomprehensible season.
– In Bryansk it was 13.39 seconds, now – 13.31. Orlando Ortega in Monaco at the stage of the “Diamond League” ran for 13.11. What do you think? Is he better prepared, or were his opponents forced to run faster than you?
– Not in this case. This is only the second start of the season for me. They have a national level. Ortega ran both at home and in Monaco. At international competitions, the motivation is generally different, and so is the readiness. He picked up more competitive practice than I did.
In principle, my result today is such that it can be explained. There is only one recipe – competition. The track and field season was invented for this. When I start to compete in May, I accelerate from such seconds. If this season were normal, I would run much faster.
– How tired are you from the absence of powerful competitors at domestic Russian competitions?
– There is still competition at some level. I think the Russian championship looks very decent. It is clear that for me the victory here is a stage long gone. I would have something else. Unfortunately, this is not yet possible.
– An unpleasant situation with doping control in Bryansk. Journalist Sergei Lisin in his telegram channel “Naked Sport” suggested that this could have happened because of the confusion with the inspector, who did not know that you still had to run the final or because of the suspicion of using short insulin before the start. How did it end? And how do you feel about these assumptions?
– About insulin … Dirty speculation. How could you even voice it?
In fact, they insisted on doing it within the rules. You just need to know not only your own rules, but also understand the nuances of the sport you are working with. The instructions of the RUSADA (Russian Anti-Doping Agency. – Sport24) employees demonstrated a lack of knowledge of where they came from, who they were dealing with, and so on.
I lost my temper then, I had a scandal. This was a new situation for me. They really interfered with work. I got infected with this from the coach. This is perhaps the only stress factor for him.
I wrote a letter to the anti-doping coordinator of ARAF (All-Russian Athletics Federation – Sport24) on this topic. He promised to figure it out. I’m waiting.
– Angelica Sidorova said that if World Athletics promptly issues a neutral status, she will not continue the season. What will you do?
– I will definitely continue. I hope that somewhere, someday … October, Doha … If only there were barriers, if only there were rivals. I don’t want to rest yet.
