Animals in the Netherlands excreted slightly less nitrogen last year than a year earlier. This is a decrease of 1.2 percent, according to research by Statistics Netherlands. Nitrogen excretion was 465 million kilograms. That is almost 5 percent below the new nitrogen ceiling that the European Commission has set for the Netherlands.
In 2022, the nitrogen excretion in the manure of cows, pigs and chickens, among others, will remain 24 million kilos below the nitrogen ceiling. According to this new guideline, the total excretion of nitrogen may be a maximum of 489.4 million kilos.
Nitrogen excretion is different from nitrogen emission. Excretion is all nitrogen that an animal excretes and defecates. Nitrogen emissions are all nitrogen that is released into the air during this process. The total excretion is therefore much greater than the emission.
Since 2017, nitrogen excretion from livestock has decreased by 47 million kilos.
Richtlijnen voor stikstofuitstoot
- Nederland moet zich houden aan de Nitraatrichtlijn: voor het gebruik van dierlijke mest mag 170 kilo stikstof per hectare worden gebruikt.
- Er is een uitzondering van 230 kilo voor bedrijven in Overijssel, Gelderland, Utrecht, Noord-Brabant en Limburg.
- Voor landbouwgrond in de rest van ons land geldt 250 kilo per hectare.
- Die hogere normen gelden op twee voorwaarden: maximaal 150,7 miljoen kilo fosfaat en 489,4 miljoen kilo stikstof in Nederland per jaar.
- Het afwijken van de Europese afspraken wordt derogatie genoemd. Dat wordt vanaf 2023 afgebouwd en in 2026 is het verboden.
Also less excretion of phosphate
Phosphate excretion amounted to 148 million kilos and did not change. But the amount is more than 150 million kilos below the production ceiling.
Dairy cattle excrete more phosphate and less nitrogen. This is because the nitrogen content in their food (especially grass and maize) was lower than normal that year and the phosphate content was higher.
The decrease in nitrogen excretion is also related to the decrease in the number of animals.
