Shrimp Harvesting Season Kicks Off in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province

Dammam: The first shrimps arrived at local fish markets in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province on Tuesday, marking the start of the shrimp harvesting season. The shrimp harvesting season in Saudi Arabia starts on the first day of August every year and lasts for six months. The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture in the region imposes a ban on shrimp fishing for about half of the year to provide protection and background for shrimp growth.

Amir bin Ali Al Mutairi, Director General of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture in the region, said that banning shrimp fishing for half of the year is aimed at providing opportunities for population growth, reproduction and breeding in shrimp breeding centers. He said the ministry’s eastern provincial branch continued to issue shrimp fishing permits.

Last year in the province, 10,254 tonnes of shrimp were netted with the help of 646 boats in Al Khatif and Jubail. A group of 16 kg small shrimps is expected to fetch 400 riyals, 500 riyals for a medium size, 700 riyals for a large one and 1,000 riyals for the largest size.
