Shows some signs of improvement – VG

SICK: Artist Justin Bieber has been diagnosed with a rare syndrome that causes paralysis of the face. The photo was taken earlier this year during the Grammy Awards in Las Vegas in April.

Canadian pop star Justin Bieber, 28, is showing early signs of recovery, according to a surgeon. Another medical expert, however, is not as optimistic.

Bieber went out on Friday and said he had stayed diagnosed with the rare disease Ramsey Hunt syndrome. This means, among other things, that parts of his face are paralyzed.

Bieber has said that he is physically unable to perform and will now take the time to recover. He explains in the video that he can not blink with one eye and you can also see that the smile is not as usual.

– It’s quite serious. I wish that was not the case, but obviously my body tells me I have to calm down, Bieber said in the video.

The pop star has thus had to postpone a number of concerts in the time ahead. Bieber is scheduled to perform in Trondheim on August 7 this year. It is not yet known whether the concert will go as planned.

Some signs of improvement

Symptoms include painful rashes or blisters inside the mouth, ear, scalp and hairline. Loss of sense of taste and deafness in the affected ear can also occur.

How serious the disease development will be is so far not clear. Surgeon Charles Nduka, a specialist in facial paralysis, told Reuters that about 75 percent of patients with the syndrome who receive early treatment, including steroids and antiviral drugs, will recover completely.

– I noticed in the video that was shared by Bieber, that he shows some signs of improvement, which is uplifting, says Nduka, who is also a co-founder of the charity Facial Palsy UK for people with facial paralysis.

Nduka also urges Bieber to resist pressure and take time to recover before returning to the stage and the limelight. Failure to do so could lead to long-term problems.

Not as optimistic

Professor Derick Wade, on the other hand, says Sky News that Bieber shows serious signs, even though he also says that most people recover completely. Bieber appears to have had fairly extensive paralysis and may remain paralyzed in the long term, according to Wade, an expert in neurological rehabilitation at Oxford Brooks University.

– I noticed that there was no movement, so it is a pretty serious loss, he says.

The virus affects a facial nerve in a very narrow canal in the skull. It leads to swelling in a place where there is no room for swelling, so then the nerve stops working while it is inflamed, Wade explains.

How long it takes varies greatly, according to Wade. For some it takes three weeks, for others it takes several months.

– Some people are left with it in the long run, and there is some remaining impact, Wade says.

Open about health challenges

Bieber has previously been open about health challenges, among other things in connection with a collapse after the wedding in 2018. He has also dedicated the world to everything from own substance abuse to lack of trust in the relationship.

But it is not just Justin Bieber who has struggled with illness. His wife Hailey Bieber has also had her challenges. In March this year, she said that she had been hospitalized with what was described as brain-related symptoms.

– I was transported to hospital, and they found out that I had a small blood clot in my brain, she wrote on InstaStory.
