BRAZIL IN “WAR” AGAINST FIRES IN THE SOUTHEAST OF SAO PAULO

Brazil is in an intense battle against forest fires and crime, according to Environment Minister Marina Silva. In Sao Paulo state, more than 40 cities are on high alert due to fires that have devastated the region. Federal Police have launched investigations to determine the cause of the fire, and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stressed that no fires caused by lightning have been recorded, suggesting human intervention. Amid this crisis, Sao Paulo Governor Tarcisio de Freitas has declared a state of emergency in 45 municipalities and arrests have been made of those suspected of starting the fires.

The situation is critical, especially in Ribeirao Preto, where residents have had to evacuate due to the proximity of the flames and the thick layer of smoke that has darkened the city. The fires have caused the death of livestock, the cancellation of flights and damage to crops, with August being the most destructive month in terms of fires since 1998. The government links this crisis to climate change and is seeking international support to face the challenges. Despite having reduced deforestation, more than 48 thousand fire outbreaks have been recorded in the Amazon region this year, which represents a significant increase compared to the previous year.

Ecuadorian President Targeted for Gender-Based Political Violence

Ecuador’s Electoral Disputes Tribunal has admitted a complaint filed by Vice President Verónica Abad against President Daniel Noboa and other officials, accusing them of political gender violence. This violation, considered very serious under Ecuadorian law, can lead to sanctions such as fines, dismissal and suspension of political rights for up to four years. The tribunal has called for a hearing to present evidence and arguments on September 12, following a fractured relationship between Abad and Noboa since the election campaign.

The vice president accuses Noboa and other members of her government of pressuring her to resign, citing her recent move to Turkey for security reasons as an example. Noboa has disqualified Abad, claiming that her intention is to remove him from power. Although political gender violence is sanctioned in the Code of Democracy, experts have pointed out that the Ecuadorian Constitution does not contemplate presidential dismissal for this cause, which limits the consequences that Noboa could face.
