A shower for the human soul – this is what actress and director Rēzija Kalniņa says about the plays by American author Sean Grenan. She has already staged two of Grenan’s works – “Make God Laugh” and “Tin Woman” at the Daile Theater, and on October 30 will be the premiere of the author’s third play “Now and Then”. It will also officially open the new music and drama room “OratoriO”, which is hosted by Rēzija Kalniņa together with her husband, conductor Ainārs Rubiķis.
Several events have taken place in the new cultural place before, and it has already established its own audience.
There is a secret in the play that the author Sean Grenan has included in the title “Now and Then”. Leaving it to the viewers, it can generally be said that it is a job that calls us to think about everyone’s choices in our lives and what we would do if we could turn back time and make choices again.
What would you tell yourself if you could meet yourself when, for example, you were 16 years old?
Rēzija Kalniņa has asked many people such a question while working on the show, and it has been very interesting for her to hear the answers, and in a sense it will also be a question for the audience of the show.
Rēzija Kalniņa explains: “Tell me, what would you like to tell yourself? This is exactly the play. About choices and that, however, there is something we cannot influence. Whatever choice we make, we cannot influence it. Because there is something that is decided. And it’s so beautiful in reality, soothing, giving, because you realize you’re in the hands of some greater power. And no matter what you, little ant, do there, the big ant leader will take care of you anyway. ”
This is the third play by Sean Grenan, staged by Rēzija Kalniņa, because in the author’s message she finds values that she thinks are most important to talk about in the theater.
The director says: “I have always been addressed by the topic of relationships, relationships with a loved one, a child, family. It seems to me that this is what people really need. Yesterday in the rehearsal I sat in a corner myself and saw that two young people, not already elderly, at my age, but young people are starting to cry … We have also called this show a soul shower or a shower for the soul. And that’s the only way I see the need for modern theater, their live communication, experience and participation. ”

The ensemble of actors for the show has gathered from various Latvian theaters, including actors who are no longer in the theater staff. The actors in the show will play in different compositions, and among them are Esmeralda Ermale, Juris Kalniņš, Jānis Skanis, Jana Herbsta, Ilze Trukšāne, Raimonds Celms and Maksims Busels.
Jānis Skanis describes his participation in the show as a beautiful reunion, but Juris Kalniņš – as a return, because Rēzija Kalniņa has managed to persuade her to play again.
“Basically, I had already put an end to all this, I don’t know how Rezia managed, what buttons she works with, that she managed to pull me out of the cave,” reveals Juris Kalnins.
Jānis Skanis adds: “For Juris it is a return, for me it is a meeting. Meeting Rēzija Kalniņa, this place, people I know and people I only met here. ”
The show will also feature two actors from Mikhail Chekhov’s Riga Russian Theater – Jan Herbst and Maxim Busel.
Jana Herbsta says: “I will finally play in Latvian in ten years. I really wanted such an opportunity at last. Starting from 2010, when I entered the Academy of Culture, after that I was admitted to the staff of the Riga Russian Theater, but I had not yet managed to play in Latvian. ”
Maksims Busels also notes: “Thank you for this opportunity to speak Latvian not only with friends and colleagues, but now also from the stage. It’s still hard for me to believe it’s happening. “
The actors say that a special added value when working on the show is the family and warm atmosphere of “OratoriO”. This is also emphasized by Esmeralda Ermale:
“It is wonderful here, here we feel loved, cared for, cherished. I’ve never felt that way in any job. “
To create a place with a free and cordial atmosphere, where everyone could feel at home and enjoy high-quality art events – this was also the main goal of creating “OratoriO”, admits the implementer of the idea Ainārs Rubiķis.
