Showdown between Amazon and New York Attorney General over employee working conditions

Recently, a dispute has arisen between New York Attorney General Letitia James and Amazon. Indeed, James would have conducted an investigation into the security problems related to Covid-19 and Amazon would have rebelled, surprising that the Attorney General was not empowered to conduct this investigation which is, according to the company, the responsibility of the federal law.

Amazon reportedly made billions off workers without even keeping them safe

For Amazon, Letitia James has crossed the line and the company has taken the district court to request the end of the investigation in two fulfillment centers, reports us Engadget. According to Amazon, James threatened to sue the company if it did not subsidize workers’ bus rides and reinstate a former employee who was laid off last spring.

This worker is called Chris Smalls and he claims that Amazon fired him for leading a protest in a warehouse. But, for its part, Amazon explains that the dismissal of this employee is due to the fact that he attended the rally when he was supposed to be on paid leave for Covid quarantine. For her part, Letitia James, claimed that:

Throughout this pandemic, Amazon employees have been forced to work in dangerous conditions as the company and its CEO earn billions on their backs. This Amazon action is nothing more than a sad attempt to deflect attention from the facts and shirk responsibility for its failures and protect hardworking employees from a deadly virus.

Let’s be clear: we won’t be intimidated by anyone, especially corporate bullies who put profits before the health and safety of workers. We are not discouraged in our efforts to protect workers from exploitation and will continue to consider all of our legal options.
