Nintendo’s atypical, even unique, Switch console is still not vying for power. Granted, a 4K release could be in the planning for next year, but Nintendo officially denies it, as its goal for now is to make you dream of an OLED switch.
two out of three
While the Switch Lite has moved on from the hybrid character that has defined the Switch since its inception, this new OLED switch retains the original form factor. It’s always possible to remove a Joy-Con on the side – and it’s entirely possible to use an existing Joy-Con, whether or not you’ve become a celebrity The point.
In a way, we can say that this new approach adds to the concept of the Switch as it is a nice improvement for two of the three game modes available.
For those who did not attend in 2017, we remind you that it is possible to play the Switch in three ways:
- As a portable console, we will not draw any graphics for you,
- As a monitor on the corner of a table / board / knee / backpack / etc. Play with others (or alone, why not)
- And finally, as a “living room” console when connected to its own dock.
Two out of three, you’ll immediately understand why.

Apple-OLED
The big novelty of this OLED switch is, well … it’s OLED. Where the first Switch featured a 6.2-inch LCD panel, the newcomer rolls up its sleeves and pushes the edges back without changing the case size. Thinner and more discreet, it allows the inclusion of a much larger OLED panel with a diagonal of 7 inches.
It doesn’t look like much on paper, but in action, console in hand, it really is day and night. The display area grows significantly and thus offers a significantly higher degree of coverage for the front panel of the switch. The OLED model hit 76.1% versus 61.6% for the previous generation.

So we’re gaining visual relief, and it’s honestly difficult to go back to the much smaller LCD panel after a few hours with the OLED model. Proof that you can get used to quiet quickly. Attention, the resolution of an OLED panel is always high-resolution, i.e. 1280 x 720 pixels. Nothing changes about that. As a result, the pixels are more noticeable in some games.
We have to admit this with genius, however the same wild The width of the smallest square millimeter of the Kingdom of Hyrule plus bliss. So we won’t argue – when is the 4K version actually?
If, on the other hand, the definition does not change, the switch to OLED clearly means “infinite” contrast. Blacks are black because they might have looked a bit gray or a bit black on the previous generation Switch. It is clear that some games and groups, even the artistic direction, will benefit from this.
In terms of brightness, we know that some OLED panels can generally be less efficient than LCD panels. In this case, our methods result in almost complete parity between the two switch generations. The difference is clearly imperceptible to the naked eye.
That said, those who sometimes have a hard time playing outside in direct sunlight with a first-generation Switch will run into the same problem with this new OLED model, which still shines pretty well. With around 300 cd / m², do not expect to play comfortably outside in the middle of summer if the tree does not provide its shade.
It should be noted that in terms of subpixels, the panel used is very similar to the high quality Samsung OLED panels used in high-end computers. So it’s a little encouraging.
To finish off the panel, it’s because the buttons are bigger or purely psychological, but the OLED switch seemed a bit more sensitive to touch, even if we rarely resort to digital interaction with the switch, if only for fingerprints and thoughts avoid .
It is too early to measure the impact of OLED on autonomy. With the same volume and brightness, we could expect a slight increase in autonomy. However, because the OLED panel is larger, it is possible that increasing the display area will offset the energy savings.
For a few millimeters and grams
It should also be noted that our measurements show that the OLED switch is slightly wider than on the predecessor (17.55 cm vs. 17.3). You won’t feel at all when you receive it, don’t worry, and various accessories, including tote bags, shouldn’t get in the way. Especially since the two controllers respect exactly the same height – undoubtedly a prerequisite for compatibility with the same Joy-Con.
On the other hand, these few millimeters go hand in hand with a small jump in weight. Plan 20g more for the OLED adapter. Not enough to have a tennis elbow Mario Tennis, but if you find the key to be a little heavy in the long run, you should feel comfortable with its impression.
play on the crutch
However, there is good news for them. The stand on the back of the console is now much wider and therefore more stable. It’s almost enough if you don’t rest on your tight thighs. We have to see what that is date It shrugs, but looks a lot more solid than the length of the first adapter, which isn’t exactly that heavy. It is mainly used to adjust the angle of the console. Useful when you play alone or with friends at a corner of the table to find the angle that satisfies everyone – after all, the profit is worth it Mario Kartwhen it’s smeared by a bad gamer claiming the poser didn’t see the screen properly?
Those first measurements and comments are mostly focused on the board – the main novelty of this switch. We’ll be spending a few more hours running it so we can give you a fuller opinion on any improvements and tweaks.
One thing is certain at first glance, for those who mainly use the switch in a nomadic position or sitting on a table corner, this OLED model is a nice gain in comfort that could justify a purchase (or an exchange). The recommended retail price is just under 350 euros and the console will be available from today, October 8, 2021.
Since the switch of the first generation is still in the catalog, the used resale shouldn’t suffer too big a drop in price. It all depends on the condition of your device. You will understand, we reserve our final opinion and leave it to you. We have an emergency meeting with Samos …
