Should you brush your teeth in the morning, before or after breakfast?

Brushing your teeth before breakfast is better for your tooth enamel and overall oral health. However, if you prefer to brush your teeth after eating, wait about 30-60 minutes.

The American Dental Association has long recommended brushing twice daily for two full minutes each time. But what these guidelines don’t recommend is exactly when you should brush your teeth.

Why might it be better to brush your teeth before breakfast?

During sleep, bacteria multiply in the mouth. Washing these bacteria directly with a toothpaste containing fluoride will rid your teeth of plaque and bacteria. It also covers the enamel with a protective barrier against acids in your food.

You should avoid brushing your teeth after eating for at least 30 minutes if you eat something acidic, such as toast, citrus fruits, and coffee.

One study showed that after brushing, saliva production increased for up to 5 minutes. Your saliva helps break down food and kills harmful bacteria in the mouth naturally.

Precautions for brushing teeth after breakfast

If brushing your teeth after breakfast is better for your morning routine, you can still do it, but here’s some information to keep in mind.

Brushing immediately after breakfast may cover your teeth with acidic food residue, weakening the enamel. The staple foods in breakfast are considered some of the worst foods for tooth enamel, including: orange juice, fruits, bread, and pastries.

Therefore, brushing may be especially bad for your teeth right after breakfast.

Waiting 30 minutes to an hour after eating is the best way to ensure your teeth are protected and the enamel is not tampered with. It is also recommended to drink water or chew sugar-free gum after eating to clean your teeth before brushing them.
