Should Vy have full control of the railway around Oslo? It’s not quite that simple though.

Vy can get as much money for running trains around Oslo as they have received so far. But now the governing parties are scratching their heads. The opposition shouts no.

If the government gets what it wants, Vy is best placed to run local train lines around Oslo, as they do today.

There will still be Vy on the local trains around Oslo. Also on trains to and from Skien, Halden, Lillehammer, Kongsvinger and Eidsvoll.

The new government has signaled this. During the election campaign, the Labor Party even aired buying Go-Ahead and SJ out of the contracts on the Sørlandsbanen, Dovrebanen and Nordlandsbanen.

But is it so easy just to give the train assignment for the Oslo area on to Vy?

Aftenposten has asked the governing parties and a skeptical opposition in the Storting.

The answer is no.

  • To succeed, the government must sign a so-called direct contract with Vy. It must last for the next ten years.
  • They must do so by Christmas Eve 2023.
  • But they must also make a completely new agreement, with new financial conditions.

This is where the problems arise.
