MEPs must vote on three legal texts. 1,900 proposals with textual adjustments or “amendments” have been tabled. Because of corona, the voting is done remotely, which takes more time to process the results. The final result will not be known until late Friday evening. European farmers will receive 350 billion euros in agricultural subsidies in the coming year, and in return must adhere to all kinds of conditions. The legal texts concern, among other things, those conditions: which climate objectives must be achieved, how many pesticides can still be used, what do farmers have to do to maintain biodiversity.
Environmental organizations fear that the compromises worked out by the Christian Democrats, Social Democrats and Liberals do not at all meet the objectives of the European “Green Deal”. The European Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski also has reservations about some adjustments. The agricultural package is also on the table this week with the European agriculture ministers in Luxembourg. They too are trying to reach a compromise. In the coming weeks and months, negotiators from the European Parliament and the Member States will try to reach a final compromise.
