– The patient said that he had put a plastic ball in the anus two days earlier. According to the patient and his wife, the ball was pushed in to treat hemorrhoids, the study authors write.
A hemorrhoid is a blood vessel near the rectal opening that is enlarged, so it appears as a bulge or varicose vein, according to Lommelegen.
Such a bulge may consist of palpable balls in the rectum, according to the website. There is a lot you can do to remedy the problem yourself, but pushing a bullet into the rectum is not among them.
The patient could tell that the bullet came from a carpet cleaner.
– Used screwdriver and spoon
The man said that he tried to get the bullet out on his own, before he went to the hospital.
– The man had tried to use a screwdriver and a spoon, the doctors write.
Apart from pain in the buttocks, the man should not have had any other symptoms. The 51-year-old appeared healthy and cooperative, according to the case study.
Now the doctors could feel that there was actually a plastic ball in there.
– We could not see any hemorrhoids, they point out in the case study.
An attempt was made to remove the ball in the emergency room, without success.
Therefore, the doctors took X-rays of the man’s abdomen to assess the situation. The 51-year-old was tried for surgery the following morning.
While the man was under anesthesia, the surgeons tried to remove the ball from the anal canal using “adequate lubrication”.
But this was to prove futile, as the bullet turned out to be wider than the pelvic opening. Therefore, it was decided to open the abdominal cavity, to remove the ball surgically.
Attached boom
The surgeons made a 10 centimeter long incision in the abdomen, and opened up the abdomen layer by layer to get to the area.

They tried to push the ball down through the rectum – but this did not work. The ball was stuck in the pelvis, and it was not possible to move it upwards.
After several hours of effort, without the ball moving out of place, it was decided to try to divide it into smaller parts.
After many more hours at the operating table, the surgeons had managed to divide the ground into three smaller parts that made it easier to get it out.
Got a colostomy
In total, it took seven hours to remove the large plastic ball from the man’s back.
Because the operation was so invasive, the surgeons had to operate on the rectum so that the stool would not pass the surgical wound.
The man therefore received a so-called colostomy, as a type of procedure where the patient gets a connection from the colon through the skin on the stomach, according to Large medical encyclopedia.
The operation was successful, and the patient was discharged home from the hospital. The doctors will later consider whether the ostomy bag should be removed.
– Feeling ashamed
According to the study authors, foreign bodies in the rectum are still relatively uncommon, but this has happened more and more often recently – especially in urban areas.
–
It most often occurs in men aged 30-40 years, according to the study. In 75 percent of the cases, the object is put up in the rectum as a result of a desire for sexual satisfaction.
“Diagnosis and treatment of the problem can be challenging, partly because the patient may feel ashamed and will not provide details about the incident,” they write.
