The prefecture of Seine-et-Marne affirms it, the pupils of the primary schools of the department will no longer be obliged to wear the mask in class from tomorrow Monday, October 18. However, the incidence rate is above the alert threshold according to the latest statistics from Public Health France.
In a tweet published on October 14, the prefecture of Seine-et-Marne announced it and it looked like good news for the 164,000 primary school students in this department.

End of mandatory mask wearing for schoolchildren
According to the prefecture, from Monday, October 18, children are no longer obliged to wear a mask in class due to the drop in contamination. For several days, the incidence rate had indeed been below the alert threshold of 50 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
From mid-September, the figures for Seine-et-Marne fluctuated between 48 and 47 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants according to figures published by Public Health France.
According to the Regional Health Agency, (source SI-DEP of October 13) the incidence rate is 49 for the week of September 27 to October 3 and 48 for the week of October 4 to 10, down 2.1%. “The incidence rate among residents of the Île-de-France region was 63 cases per 100,000 inhabitants for the first week of October and stopped decreasing after 7 consecutive weeks of decline. can we read in their weekly press release.
Level 1 of health protocol established by the Ministry of National Education could thus apply and the students remove the mask. For the wearing of the mask to no longer be compulsory at school, it is necessary that “the incidence rate stabilizes below the threshold of 50 per 100,000 inhabitants“said government spokesman Gabriel Attal on September 22, for at least five consecutive days.
A decree concerning Seine-et-Marne was therefore published on October 14 lifting the obligation to wear a mask at school in the classrooms and in the courtyard. Only children attending primary school are concerned, this measure does not apply to middle and high school students, nor to teachers and adults present in primary schools.
Another consequence, also in the canteen, children are no longer forced to eat by class group and at the same table every day as required by level 2 of the health protocol.
If we are to believe the prefecture, Seine-et-Marne is therefore the first department in the region to benefit from this relaxation measure and joins the 79 other French departments where schoolchildren can go to class without wearing their masks.
An incidence rate above the alert threshold
Or selon the latest French public health statistics, Seine-et-Marne has crossed the threshold of 50 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants. It amounts to 51.8, therefore not allowing schoolchildren to remove their masks during class, still according to this same National Education health protocol.
Contacted, the duty sub-prefect for this Sunday, October 17, specified that “the legal decision was taken on October 14 based on figures provided by the Regional Health Agency (ARS)“. Requested the ARS has so far not responded to our request for an interview.
On May 18, the prefecture of Seine-et-Marne announced on Twitter the end of the obligation to wear a mask outside, with some exceptions. But a few hours after the publication of the tweet, she reversed this decision. AT “cause of a handling error”, reported then The Parisian in an article published the same day.
