Kinder: During the summer holidays, you can earn a little extra money with part-time jobs in order to have a little more pocket money and then be able to buy things yourself. I’ve heard that MPs want students under the age of 18 to get the minimum wage of 12 euros too, because some are only getting 5 euros or less.
NDR Info children’s news: In Germany, the minimum wage that everyone who works has to earn is set: At the moment it is 12 euros per hour and that is the minimum wage. It doesn’t matter what job you do, but how old you are. So far it’s like this
Kinder: … that there is actually no real law as to how much they get, the children who do a holiday job.
NDR Info children’s news: Only those who work and are at least 18 years old get at least 12 euros per hour. That means delivering the newspaper or babysitting or working in an ice cream parlor as a holiday job is often poorly paid. That’s unfair, says Kevin Kühnert. He is a politician in the SPD and together with other politicians he now wants to change that. However, the rules for holiday jobs should continue to apply, such as these:
Kinder: If you are under 18 and want to work during the holidays, you also need parental consent. Children who are at least 13 years old can work a maximum of two hours a day, but not at night. Young people from the age of 16 are allowed to work in restaurants until 10 p.m., for example they are allowed to serve people.
