Should you give way if another vehicle asks to pass you?
In Chile, the maximum speed allowed on highways is 120 km/h. If a driver is driving at this speed on the fast lane, intended for overtaking maneuvers, and another vehicle behind requests passage using its lights, it is mandatory to give way.
The regulations establish that The left lane should not be used for constant driving, but only for overtaking other vehicles. Once the overtaking maneuver is completed, you must return to the right lane, regardless of the speed at which you are driving.
Traffic rules on highways and roads according to the New Driver’s Book
The New Driver’s Book in Chile establishes the following rules for driving on highways and roads:
- On motorways and highways, you must drive in the right lane when your speed is lower than the maximum permitted speed.
- You must drive in the right lane unless you are passing another vehicle.
- You must pass other vehicles only on the left.
- If you pass a motorcyclist, you must leave a safe lateral distance.
- You must not use the shoulder for circulation.
- Traffic signs are there to protect you. Obey them, do what they tell you to do, and drive carefully when they warn you of a hazard.
