The updated recommendations for corona vaccination have been in effect since the beginning of the year. For whom and when the jab still makes sense.
The majority of people in Germany have now been vaccinated against Corona several times and have also had one or more infections. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), this basic immunity offers good protection against severe Covid courses. For healthy people, there is therefore no increased risk of becoming seriously ill. For risk groups, however, a Corona infection can still lead to severe courses of illness.
The Standing Committee on Vaccination (Stiko) therefore updated its recommendation on Covid-19 vaccination in January 2024. Since then, it has recommended an annual booster vaccination in the fall for all people with an increased risk of a severe course of the disease or an increased risk of infection.
For people in these groups whose immune systems are not impaired and who have already had a corona infection in the current year, the annual booster vaccination in the fall is usually not necessary.
Annual booster vaccinations are currently not recommended for healthy adults under 60 years of age and healthy pregnant women who already have basic immunity.
