JAKARTA – In the past, 5G phones were only available in the flagship class with a price tag of over Rp. 10 million. Now, mobile phones that can access the 5G network can be obtained with a price tag of IDR 2 million.
Then, many questions arise. Is now the time to buy a 5G phone, considering that operators like Telkomsel have already rolled out 5G networks in Indonesia?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of buying a 5G phone now versus one and two years from now?

This consideration is important, because it is known that the 5G network is currently still in its early stages.
Operators such as Telkomsel have already delivered 5G networks in several cities. Starting from Jakarta, Surabaya, Makassar, Bali, Batam, Medan, Solo, Balikpapan, to Bandung. And this should be appreciated. This means that the commitment to building a 5G network has started and is ongoing.
However, the construction of a 5G network also takes time. Because it is still early, the current 5G network is not optimal. It will still take a few more years for the impact of the 5G network to be felt by more users.
This means that even if we buy 5G phones now, the value we get is still limited.
And that’s not all, buying a 5G phone now also has an impact on the specifications and price of a device.
This is affected by the 5G chip. The cheapest 5G chip at the moment, the Dimensity 700, is still very expensive. Because of the high price, there must be an adjustment. There must be other components that are reduced in 5G phones. For example, instead of using AMOLED screens, phones with 5G chips must use IPS LCD screens in order to achieve the desired price.
This means that at the same price as 4G LTE phones, the specifications of 5G phones will automatically be lower.
So now what to do? Should I buy a 5G phone? Or is it better to keep waiting?
Country Director Xiaomi Indonesia Alvin Tse has a good answer. According to Alvin, automatic technology companies want to be at the forefront. Always wanted to be a pioneer, be the first. Therefore, even though the 5G network of telecommunication operators in Indonesia is not yet optimal, they still shower the market with 5G phones. While running, cell phone manufacturers also continue to adapt hardware technology to the operator’s 5G network, which is still relatively new.
Alvinlantas said there are two types of consumers. The first is the early adopter/tech enthusiast and the second is the majority.
While the majority are looking for the most profitable for them, the early adopters/tech enthusiasts are those who dare to take risks, dare to try new things, and dare to enjoy the risks of the imperfections of the new technology.

Because according to Alvin the formulation of all completely new technologies is the same: high price, low experience/convenience. That’s what’s happening in today’s 5G smartphones. The question is, which consumer do you choose to be?
