Some people with cardiovascular diseases want to eat salted fish, such as herring and fesikh, during the Sham El-Nessim holiday, but are concerned about its effects on their health.

In this regard, Dr. Jamal Shaaban, former dean of the National Heart Institute, warned against eating fesikh and herring in light of the incidence of cardiovascular disease.
Shaaban attributed the reason to the fact that herring and fesikh contain a high percentage of sodium, which may threaten heart patients with high blood pressure and fluid retention in the body.

He added that fluid retention resulting from eating salted fish may increase the risk of heart failure, calling on patients to stay away from it completely.

He explained that eating salted fish in light of diuretics may lead to dehydration, especially if the patient is not interested in drinking an abundant amount of water, to compensate for the fluids lost through urine.
While healthy people, a consultant cardiologist recommended eating salted fish in a moderate amount, not more than 150 grams per meal, because excessive amounts of it may expose them to the same risks.

Shaaban concluded his speech by pointing out the importance of buying salted fish from reliable places, because eating species that have not been properly stored and preserved may lead to food poisoning, due to the growth of harmful bacteria.
