At least 23 people have been injured in a gunshot in a New York subway station. The perpetrator is on the run. The police are currently not assuming a terrorist background.
A previously unknown suspect shot around in a New York subway, injuring several people. The number of injuries has now risen to 23, ten of them from gunshots, said a spokeswoman for the New York Fire Department. Five people are in a serious but not life-threatening condition.
The suspect is on the run, said New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell. According to previous findings, he is said to have put on a gas mask on an N subway train in the Brooklyn district and then opened a container in a pocket from which smoke gushed into the car. He then opened fire. Footage from the train and the 36th Street subway station in Brooklyn shows bloodied people lying on the floor while others tend to them.
At the moment, the police are not assuming a terrorist attack, the police chief said. However, the investigation has only been running for a few hours, and the situation could still change. The perpetrator is volatile and dangerous. Investigators are looking for a man wearing a gas mask and work vest.

Shots were fired in rush hour
The shots were fired in the morning rush hour, it was reported ARD correspondent Peter Mücke. At around 8.30 a.m. local time, the emergency services were alerted, initially because of the smoke. The subway station is located south of Manhattan in the neighborhood of Sunset Park in the borough of Brooklyn. Sunset Park used to be mainly industrial, but today many young people and families also live and work there.
Several subway lines meet at the station, the trains of which stopped at the stations. There were numerous delays and cancellations. Schools near the station were temporarily closed, US media quoted a spokesman for the New York school system as saying. Only school children were allowed in, but no one else and no one out. In recent months, gun incidents have become a growing problem in New York.
Police deny reports of explosive devices
Initially, there had been reports that explosive devices had also been found in the station. The police quickly denied this on Twitter. However, she asked people to avoid the area around the station.
US President Biden informed
US President Joe Biden was also informed about the shots, his spokeswoman said. White House officials are in contact with New York Mayor Eric Adams and the police leadership. If necessary, the government is ready to give the city all the help it needs.
