The military compound never closed, but security was increased there.
U.S. Air Force security guards engaged in a shootout with someone who fired two shots at the entrance to Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland early Saturday, a base spokeswoman said.
“A shooting outside the base, from a vehicle driving by that fired shots toward the gate, prompted a response from our security guards,” base spokeswoman Stefanie Antosh said in a statement.
“There is no threat to the facility. There were no injuries or fatalities,” he added.
Antosh said the incident is being investigated by San Antonio police, who said in a statement that the first shooting occurred around 2:15 a.m.
“Security personnel said they heard several gunshots and heard the bullets being fired fly past them,” Sgt. Washington Moscoso said in the statement.
“Following this incident, the number of armed security guards was increased as a precautionary measure,” he explained.
A vehicle later stopped near the same entrance shortly after 4:30 a.m., Moscoso said.
“For the second time, shots were fired at Air Force security personnel. However, with additional security personnel present, several Air Force personnel returned fire at the suspect vehicle,” Moscoso said.
After the shooting, the vehicle fled the scene. There were no injuries and the shooting remains under investigation, according to Moscoso.
According to Antosh, it is not known how many shots were fired, how many shooters there were or what their target was.
The entrance remained closed for several hours after the shooting and was reopened around 9:30 a.m., but the base was not closed, Antosh said.
In addition to Lackland, Joint Base San Antonio includes Randolph Air Force Base, the Army’s Fort Sam Houston and the Camp Bulllis training range.
Lackland is home to more than 24,000 active duty service members and 10,000 Department of Defense civilians, according to the base’s website.
Includes the 37th Training Wing, 149th Fighter Wing, 59th Medical Wing, Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency, 24th Army Wing, 67th Network Warfare Wing, Cryptologic Systems Group, National Security Agency and 70 attached units.
