After the gun attack that killed ten in Buffalo, New York, the FBI is assuming a racist motive. “We are investigating the case for both a hate crime and a case of racially motivated violent extremism,” Buffalo FBI investigator Stephen Belongia said at a press conference on Saturday (local time). An armed attacker opened fire in a supermarket, killing ten people and injuring three others. Most of the victims are African American.
The white attacker broadcast his act of violence live on the Internet
According to the Buffalo police, the 18-year-old white attacker broadcast his violent act live on the Internet. The heavily armed shooter was wearing a bulletproof vest and helmet. The perpetrator was arrested, according to Joseph Gramaglia of the Buffalo police.
The attacker first shot four people in the parking lot of the “Tops” supermarket in Buffalo, three of them died. Then the 18-year-old went to the supermarket and continued to fire around. Among the dead at the store is a retired police officer who worked as a security guard there. Although the man shot the attacker several times, he was able to return fire because he was wearing a bulletproof vest, as Gramaglia further reported.
“A clearly racially motivated hate crime”
Eleven of the 13 dead and injured were African Americans, police said. “It was clearly a racially motivated hate crime by someone from outside our community,” said Erie County Sheriff, where Buffalo is located, John Garcia. He called the attack “pure evil”. According to prosecutors, the perpetrator faces life imprisonment for murder. Accordingly, the attacker shot with a rifle.
Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said the perpetrator “traveled hours from out of town to commit this crime.” The 18-year-old turned the gun on himself when police arrived at the scene, but police said he was eventually persuaded to surrender.
US President Joe Biden’s spokeswoman, Karine Jean-Pierre, announced that the president had been briefed on the “horrific gun attack”. He is constantly kept up to date and prays for the victims and their families. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York tweeted, “We are with the people of Buffalo.”
New York governor: Assassination classified as “terrorism”.
The governor of the state of New York has described the fatal shooting in Buffalo as terrorism. The perpetrator is a right-wing extremist who committed a “terrorist act”, said Kathy Hochul at a press conference on Saturday evening. She sincerely hopes that this person who just committed a hate crime will spend the rest of their days behind bars. Hochul also took issue with social networks that need stricter regulation. There right-wingers would spread their ideologies and get almost intoxicated.
