A 66-year-old is said to have shot his partner in the head with a shot from a semi-automatic pistol. The victim died a short time later. The man now has to answer for manslaughter before the Bremen regional court. The background to the crime in January 2024 in the house they shared in Bremerhaven remained unclear at the start of the trial. The defendant’s lawyer said his client would not provide any information at first.

After the charges were read out, two emergency calls were played that the German defendant had made the morning after the alleged crime. In it he claimed, breathing heavily, that his partner had shot herself. She was lying dead on the floor in the kitchen, everything was covered in blood. A short time later, he called 911 again and reported that the woman was unconscious but still breathing. The caller rejected the suggestion of the fire department employee on the line to resuscitate the woman or at least press a cloth on her wound until the ambulance arrived. The reason given by the man was the large amount of blood.

It was not clear on the first day of the trial why the investigators assumed manslaughter and not suicide. The sister and adult daughter of those killed are co-plaintiffs in the trial, which continues on Friday.
