It was Saturday 21 January that the incident took place in Sumner county, in the state of Kansas, USA.
It was American Joseph Smith from Kansas City who was shot by his dog. He lived to be 30 years old.
– Joe is certainly the most unique individual I have had the pleasure of meeting. He was loved by us all, writes his boss, Chris Brown, from the charity page GoFundMe.
The page has been set up to help Smith’s family cover funeral costs.
– Shots in the car
According to the sheriff’s office in Sumner, he must have been sitting in the passenger seat of his pickup truck, when his dog accidentally stepped on the shotgun that was in the back seat.
The shotgun fired a shot, which went straight into Smith’s back.
– We received an emergency call about the accident, and responding units were on the scene after a few minutes, the Sumner Sheriff’s Office informs Kansas local newspaper, KAKE.
Headache was brain tumor
The sheriff’s office says they started CPR immediately, but Smith’s life was not saved. He died at the scene from the gunshot wounds.
Officers from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks were also on the scene, writes the American the news channel 12 news.
Receives criticism
After KAKE shared the news on his Facebook page, several readers took to the comments section to criticize the now-deceased man:
“He should have made sure that the fuse was on”one writes.
“Perhaps deserved when the weapon is loaded?”wrote another.
Several also questioned the gun laws in Kansas.
The criticism and hateful comments caused a close friend of the deceased to react. According to KAKE, the friend himself has answered the following in the comment field:
“To all the comedians and gun experts here: This man was one of my best friends. Their comments are full of hate. I know the man’s family very well, and words cannot describe how much their hearts ache right now. Shame on you!”

According to news channel Newsweek it is easy for rifles, shotguns and handguns to go off accidentally if the safety is not on. Nor does it take much for that to happen, writes the website.
Furthermore, they state that people in Kansas must complete a firearms, safety and training course in order to obtain a firearms license.

It is not the first time a man has been shot by his dog.
In 2019, a dog owner lost his gun license after his dog accidentally shot him with a rifle.
