Shortness of breath in lung patients has a major impact on quality of life

Utrecht

About three quarters of people with lung disease suffer from symptoms of shortness of breath or shortness of breath. This often has a major impact on their lives; not only when engaging in vigorous physical activities, but also in general daily activities. This is evident from Nivel research with the Monitor Care and Living Situation of People with a Lung Disease (Lung Monitor), commissioned by the Lung Fund.

Since 2001 Nivel has been monitoring the situation of people with lung disease. The insights we provide can be used to improve the living situation, and thus the quality of life, of people with lung disease.

Distress is the most important predictor of quality of life

For patients, anxiety is the most important reason for the burden of disease and is therefore an important predictor of quality of life. Every year, 34,000 people with COPD end up in the hospital very short of breath. There are nearly 100 every day. Shortness of breath and shortness of breath can have a major impact on life. Lung diseases, asthma or COPD, occur in 1.2 million people in the Netherlands (asthma and COPD) and are the number four cause of death.

About the research

In July-August 2020, Nivel conducted a questionnaire survey among members of the Monitor Care and Living Situation of People with a Pulmonary Disease, or the Lung Monitor for short. The questionnaire was completed by a total of 539 members. In addition, the questionnaire was completed by 363 members of patient associations for rare lung diseases. The monitor has been carried out by Nivel since 2001 with a grant from Lungfonds, with the aim of providing an overview of the situation of people with lung disease in the Netherlands.
