Shortage of Vaccines for Newborns in Tamaulipas: BCG and DPT in High Demand

The Ministry of Health in Tamaulipas registers a shortage of vaccines for newborns, for a month they have not had BCG and DPT, which serves to protect the child population and cover the vaccination schedule with doses to prevent measles, rubella and tuberculosis, among other diseases.

The BCG (Bacillus Calmette and Guerín) vaccine against tuberculosis, which is part of the National Vaccination Scheme that must be applied in the first days of life of newborns, remains in shortage throughout the state.

Why is there a shortage of biologicals?

The director of the Childhood and Adolescence area in Tamaulipas, María de Jesús Rodríguez, mentioned that the shortage of the biological for minors is attributed to the lack of planning and logistics to carry out the distribution of the batch of vaccines to all the states by the Federation.

“The shortage that we have is for newborns, there are two compound vaccines, BCG and DPT, we have already made the request so that it can reach us in the next month, because so far no health center has the vaccine that is applied to The newborns”.

He pointed out that so far they do not know how many vaccines could reach the state, so they hope that the consignment of the biological will be delivered to the health authorities with the largest population or those who require it.

The tuberculosis vaccine is the only biological available against this disease, the universal scheme consists of applying an intradermal dose to newborns, when this does not happen it is recommended that it be applied at least once to children, adolescents and adults, in especially those who live with a relative who presents this disease or has a high incidence.

He indicated that the shortage of biologicals exists throughout the country, which is why experts call on parents of newborns to wait for a new batch to arrive in both the public and private sectors so as not to receive a dose in poor condition.
