All reception locations of the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) are full. “The maximum occupancy has been reached at all our locations,” the organization writes on their website.
The COA wants to prevent people from having to sleep outside. And so the body is reconsidering whether the number of places in the current reception centers can be increased.
But the shortage of shelter places continues to grow. There were several days last week when people did not have their own bed, but had to sleep on a chair or a loose mattress in the waiting area.
It also happened last weekend. “Everyone had a roof over their heads, but the pressure in the asylum reception continues to increase,” says the COA. That is why the organization is calling for an increase in the number of places. It is not stated how these locations should arrange the extra places.
The COA is once again asking municipalities for help in creating additional emergency shelter locations. They would also like to see municipalities house their status holders – refugees who are allowed to stay in the Netherlands – as quickly as possible.
Each municipality has been given conditions that it must meet, but currently 15,000 status holders are still in the asylum seeker centers. If municipalities solve this, many places would become available that COA could put to good use.
