Simply producing extra coins quickly – it won’t work. The reason: a shortage of raw materials due to the war in Ukraine and the sanctions against Russia. That is why the call from Febelfin, Unizo and Comeos was made this week.

Differences between banks and accounts

Those who want to deposit change as a private person cannot simply go to their bank branch. Your financial institution usually asks you to make an appointment for this.

Whether you can go with everything else and whether you have to pay extra fees for it differs from bank to bank and sometimes even from checking account to checking account.

To the National Bank?

If you live in Brussels or come there occasionally, you can contact the National Bank of Belgium in the Berlaimontlaan. It is not possible to deposit coins there; exchange them for bills and (larger) coins. You can exchange up to 5kg of coins for free once a month. You can hand in loose change unwrapped or loose. If you do it more than once a month, you pay 2 percent of the transaction costs.

It can be done indirectly

Do you still have a big pack of euro coins that you want to carry? And you don’t want to pay to take it to your bank or go all the way to Brussels? Good news: some accounts for children and teenagers allow you to carry money – both banknotes and coins – for free, with no maximum limit. One example is the current account ‘ING Go to 18’.
