Shortage of blood and staff at the EFS in Occitanie

Today in Occitania, 7,000 to 8,000 bags of blood are available, while the stock should be 11,000. The French Blood Establishment warns of the low quantity of donations. Example in Nîmes.

Christmas, holidays, weather hazards … The end of the year is always a sensitive period for the French Blood Establishment (EFS). And thea pandemic did not fix anything. The distance in education and teleworking in companies have come add this year again to traditional difficultiestional. Instead of the 11,000 pockets that should be available, the stock is now 7,000, 8,000 bags barely in Occitanie.

On social media in recent days, many patients have expressed their gratitude to the donors, while encouraging “those who can” to go donate blood.

Donations decline even further with the peak of Wave 5 and the tightening of sanitation measures. Some are regular donors, end of year celebrations, or not: “I give regularly so it doesn’t change me much”, said one of them. A few meters further, another donor comes four times a year: “They called me, asked if I could donate because they needed blood, and I came. It’s human people need it. For me it’s a duty, it’s normal. ”

But certain preconceptions hold back other potential donors.

People think that if they are vaccinated they cannot donate. But this is not a contraindication, even if we were vaccinated the same day! And you don’t need the health pass to donate.

In recent months, numerous strikes have taken place within the EFS.

We have had a conflict for over a year with our regional and national management. We would like to have a part of Ségur that our colleagues at the hospital had. There has been a small gesture for some transfusion trades but not for all and unevenly.

The inter-union strike notice runs until January 1, “To obtain equivalent salaries at the Montpellier University Hospital and other French hospitals. There is a shortage of doctors, laboratory technicians and nurses ”, says the union representative, which indicates “a lack of five doctors for blood drives and a few nursing posts who cannot find takers in Occitanie”.

The Maison du Don de Nîmes will remain open on December 24 and 31.
