Shortage of baby milk powder in the US: problematic for baby’s health | Abroad

The US government will investigate the nationwide shortage of baby milk powder that has arisen in the United States. A special committee of the House of Representatives wants to see documents from the four largest manufacturers in the country, including Abbott Nutrition, Mead Johnson Nutrition, Nestlé and Perrigo, reports ABC News.

“The nationwide shortage of baby milk powder poses a threat to the health of babies and families across the country, especially those who earn less,” committee chair Carolyn Maloney wrote in a letter to manufacturers.

Many parents in the US have been mistaking lately when they shop for baby milk powder. The shortfall was caused, among other things, by a factory that stopped production and was subsequently exacerbated by global supply problems caused by the corona pandemic.

Maloney told ABC News that she wants to know from manufacturers before the end of the month if they have enough inventories to meet demand. She also wants to know if there is a problem in the supply chain that can be solved and how the companies want to prevent this situation from happening again.

President Joe Biden spoke to representatives of the manufacturers and retailers that sell the products today, urging them to do everything they can to help families regain access to their baby food. Hearings on the deficits have also been announced.

The US food watchdog FDA is expected to announce new plans to import powdered milk for babies shortly, the White House has said. Biden has also asked the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate reports of price inflation, for example.
