If a certain contact on the WhatsApp messenger service is uncomfortable, you can easily block this contact. Of course, this can also happen to you yourself: But how do you find out whether you have been blocked yourself?
Blocked on WhatsApp? Those are the clues
There is no very clear information – such as: “You have been blocked” – on WhatsApp. However, we can at least speculate about this with the help of several indicators. Even the company WhatsApp speaks of “hints” in its help section, so the probability of finding out is very high.
You have a high probability of being blocked by another contact on WhatsApp if the following circumstances apply:
- Online status missing: You can no longer see the “last seen” timestamp and the online status in the chat window for the corresponding contact. So you have no information about when the person last used WhatsApp.
- Missing profile picture: You won’t see updates to the contact’s profile picture. Instead of the photo, a generic gray and white replacement image with a stylized person is displayed.
- Just a tick: Any messages you send to a contact who has blocked you will only be marked with a check mark. It just means the message was sent, but it’s not getting through to the contact. However, if you see a second tick – message delivered – you have not been blocked.
- WhatsApp call does not arrive: To be absolutely sure, you can call the contact with a Whatsapp voice call. If you are blocked, the calls will not reach the recipient.
Blocked on WhatsApp? No guarantee
If the above information applies, it may mean that the relevant contact has blocked you. However, there is no guarantee. The person may also have saved very little information about themselves on WhatsApp, e.g. has no profile picture or has deactivated the read check mark.
WhatsApp itself explains the lack of a clear blocked info with privacy: “We intentionally made this unclear to protect your privacy when you block someone. That means we can’t tell you if someone is blocking you .”
Blocked on WhatsApp? This is not an indication
However, blocking a contact does not prevent both contacts from continuing to see their own messages in a shared WhatsApp group. If you are blocked by a contact, you will still see their messages in this group.
It is therefore quite possible that you have been blocked if you still see messages from the person in groups, but otherwise all of the points mentioned above have occurred.
