Short circuitthe Latino Short Film Festival in New York, celebrates its 18th edition with a captivating program that includes some of the most inventive and award-winning short films from Latin America, Spain, and Latinos living in the United States.
The festival will take place in various cultural spaces in New York City from May 2 to 5, 2022 and admission is free and open to the public.
All short films in a language other than English will be subtitled in this language. The festival is organized by the film programmer Diana Vargas and the following cultural institutions: Instituto Cervantes in New York, Consulate General of Argentina in New York, Consulate General of Colombia in New York and the support of the King Juan Carlos Center of Spain in New York University and Ron Barcelo.
The opening night, on Monday, May 2, will present at 6:00 pm at the Instituto Cervantes a selection of short films from all genres, representing a large number of countries and which have received awards at festivals around the world. The shorts are: Loba Totem (Veronica Echegui, Spain) winner of Best Short Fiction at the 2022 Goya Awards; Everyday’s bread (Manuel Sirga, Spain-US) awarded as best animation at the European Film Festival; Karina’s outfit (Frank Benitez, Colombia) official selection of Out South Queer Film Festival; Conversations with a Monkey (Eduardo Grojo, Spain) special mention in SITGES – International Fantastic Film Festival; neon ghost (Leonardo Martinelli, Brazil) winner of best short at the Locarno International Film Festival and Beast (Hugo Covarrubias, Chile), nominated in the animation category of the Academy Awards and with more than 20 international awards.
On Tuesday, May 3, a program of short films that were selected from the festival’s open call will be presented at the Argentine Consulate in New York at 6:00 pm. Among the short films are The Name of the Son (Martina Matzkin, Argentina); before i die (Iker Esteibarlanda, Spain); The Invention of Solitude (Ana Cristina Franco Varea, Ecuador); Quino’s Dream (Santiago Erlich, Spain); If it comes from Earth (Katalin Egely, Argentina-Hungary); Manchester Acatitla (Selma Cervantes Aguilar, Mexico); Ebony, Cedar and Mahogany (Nora Seilicovich, Argentina) and we vote (Santiago Requejo, Spain).
On Wednesday, May 4, short films will be shown at the Colombian Consulate in New York at 6:00 pm that speak of the recognition of the other, their values and their differences. A program for the whole family focused on the search, through stories, for the concepts of social polyphony and inclusion. The short films are Wailing (Ivan Luna, Colombia); the puppeteer (Ruben Hengesbach, Spain); minors (Juan Trueba, Spain); Tio (Juan Jose Medina, Mexico); Teo (Eduardo Bunster, Belen Abarza, Chile) y the one above (Rene Alejandro Salazar, Colombia).
On Thursday, May 5, during the closing night at the Instituto Cervantes NY at 6:30 pm, short films such asWe were all going to be queens (Yain Joel Rodríguez Alvarado, Mexico); TransformArte (Jimmy Valdivieso, Peru); Women (Fatima Luzardo, Spain); Sheraton The Trace of Memory (Margarita Poseck Menz, Chile). The festival closes with the program Latinos at Home, in which Corto Circuito celebrates the works and stories of and about Latinos in the United States. The directors will be present.
